Social Issues: Are Video Games a Harmless Hob or Health Hazard?

Article by David F. Lloyd

It may come as a shock to realize that video-gaming is almost 50 years old! The first such game was the “tennis for two” oscilloscope, which debuted in 1958.

Since then video games have proliferated in number, type and media. These games can be played on TVs, PCs, dedicated consoles, arcade machines, mobile phones and even some calculators. The three largest producers of games also happen to be the main customers, the United States, Japan and the United Kingdom, in that order. Males in the age range of 15-25 represent the most rapidly expanding number of gamers but, with the advent of more “communal” online games involving relationships, the number of female gamers is growing significantly.

There are undisputed benefits of video games both in treating illnesses and in certain training situations in the fields of aviation, education, medicine and the military. Flight simulation is one example. Also, certain games can be helpful in the treatment of diabetes, asthma and phobias.

Violence in Video Games a Cause of Aggressive and Violent Behavior

At the other end of the scale, the increasingly graphic and gratuitous violence of some games has led to various attempts–most notably in the U.S.–to proscribe certain types of violence: such as torture, mutilation, cannibalism and sexual violence. Many have attributed the video gaming industry as a reason for many social issues we see today. There is currently a system run by the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) that has seven ratings for video games from EC–Early Childhood, to AO–Adults Only. Some argue that this system is overdue for review as it is more than a decade old.

An impressive body of research dating back as far as the 1970s links various kinds of exposure to violence in the media to aggressive and violent behavior. Independent research indicates that there is a similar effect from violent video games that includes a certain element of social withdrawal. Not altogether surprisingly, research commissioned by the gaming industry itself tends to deny or minimize these effects. Most reports, however, conclude that the increase in aggression is particularly noticeable in children.

Is Heavy Gaming an Addiction?

Heavy gamers are defined in the recent “Report of the Council on Science and Public Health” [Khan, Kanof, 2007] as those playing more than two hours per day. Around 90 percent of American teenagers play video games and as many as 15 percent (5 million) may be addicted, according to this report to the American Medical Association (AMA). The online multiplayer gaming “universe,” however–playing what are technically referred to as MMORPGs (massive multiplayer online role playing games) –is a group whose players are predominantly adults. (60 percent are over 19, Griffiths, Davies & Chappell, 2003).

Still, the age groups spanning children to young post-teen adults consume the most hours playing video games; with research suggesting that this peaks around the early 20s and reduces somewhat thereafter.

The recent science and public health report to the AMA–debated in June 2007–went so far as to recommend that Internet and video-gaming addiction be formally regarded as a disorder. Although doctors backed away from using the addiction label, generally agreeing that more research was necessary, this does not mean that there are no other voices warning of addiction-like symptoms. Another study commented: “the findings relating to excessive play here suggest that some online gamers may be experiencing addictive-like experiences similar to findings in other types of video game play” (Griffiths, Davies & Chappell, 2003).

Gaming Violence as Entertainment: The Results Are In

As for the effects of playing violent video games, another research paper states unequivocally that “exposure to violent games is significantly linked to increases in violent behaviour…” with a definite link to serious and real-life aggression (Anderson, 2003). In particular, this research identifies five areas where “exposure to violent video games increases aggressive thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, increases arousal, and decreases helping behaviour.” It also cites 10 documented examples of gratuitous violence in the U.S.–including mass-murders on college campuses, as well as other crimes in Japan and Germany–all perpetrated by avid players of violent video games.

Further, adolescents are far more attracted to violence than adults and are far more likely to be excessive gamers. Thus the young are likely to be–simultaneously–both victims and perpetrators.

As never before in history, violence is an entertainment staple for many–in all its many media manifestations. In the West, we live in increasingly aggressive and savage society and culture where violent entertainment and violent actions feed one another, yet are never satiated. A rather poetic biblical description seems to capture that cycle:

There is more than enough robust evidence to warn people, particularly parents, to be very cautious about allowing themselves or their children to be drawn into a world that can be very difficult to retreat from.

Planning for Favorite Family Travel Destinations in Michigan

Planning for Favorite Family Travel Destinations in Michigan

Article by Trevor Price

Are you taking a Michigan family vacation this year? Looking for ideas on what to do or where to stay? Keep reading for a list of some of the best family-friendly destinations in the state of Michigan.

The Air Zoo

On your upcoming Michigan family vacation, make a stop at the Air Zoo – it’s a massive facility dedicated to flight and space travel. Your kids can explore a huge replica of the ISS (International Space Station), take a ride in a flight simulator or simply explore all the exhibits throughout the museum.

The Air Zoo is sponsored in part by the Smithsonian and is designed to be both a museum relating to flight and also a family entertainment center that focuses on education as well. It’s located in Portage, Michigan and open every day except Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Tickets can be expensive though. Expect to pay .50 for an adult admission ticket and about .50 for a child’s admission. Kids under the age of five can enter for free. If you’re on a budget, then try purchasing your tickets at least three days in advance from the Air Zoo website. You’ll save 10% off the ticket price, which can be a significant savings for large families.

Ford Museum

The Henry Ford Museum is all about celebrating the American experience and history of ingenuity, commerce and progress. The museum is not only educational, but also fun. However, it’s targeted toward families with children over the age of 5 – so younger kids might find the experience dull. There are different activities and itineraries for kids and adults, depending on their age and interest.

Like the Air Zoo, you can visit the Henry Ford Museum every day, except Thanksgiving and Christmas. The admission cost is for adults, for kids, for seniors and is without charge for kids under the age of 5. If you’re interested in learning more or about upcoming exhibits or events, then visit their website at thehenryford.org.

Indoor Water Park Hotels

Michigan is full of indoor water park resorts and hotels. You can hit the budget friendly Gold Rush or the family-focused Great Wolf Lodge along with numerous other water parks that are open all year-round.

Expect to pay more than you would at a standard hotel, but enjoy the benefits of relaxing by the pool while your kids are entertained with water sports and fun.

Autumn Corn Mazes

If you’re traveling to Michigan in the autumn, you have to check out a corn maze. The state has some of the biggest in the country, and they add a great touch to a Michigan family vacation. For more information on some of the best mazes in the state, you can visit bestmaze.com and get all the details you need.

New York – Sky Ride – A Great Vacation and Travel Destination

New York – Sky Ride – A Great Vacation and Travel Destination

Article by Robert W. Benjamin

The New York Sky Ride is a virtual tour simulator. It is really interesting because you take a virtual tour of the Big Apple! The Sky Ride is located on the Empire State Building’s second floor and Kevin Bacon narrates the tour. This digital virtual tour is really cool because visitors can truly tour the entire city in much less time and with much less effort than doing so on foot or in a cab!

The Sky Ride uses flight simulation that allows visitors to literally “fly” over approximately 30 different sites in this great city. People can visit New York and see all the “must sees” without having to actually spend their entire vacation sightseeing. In addition to the Sky Ride there are also two other shows played. One is a seven-minute program that discusses the history of the Empire State Building. The other is a seven-minute presentation on the “Top 10 Things to do in New York.”

This is a perfect stop for visitors to New York who want to tour the Empire State Building and would like to see some of the other hotspots in New York without necessarily having to tour them all!The New York Skyride is open from 8 am until 10 pm every day of the year. There is a shorter schedule for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years. The entire Skyride presentation takes about a half an hour so visitors can easily budget their time to include this show. Tickets are for sale at the New York Skyride Box Office or may be purchased online at a discount.

Combo tickets for the Empire State Building Observatory and the New York Skyride are available for purchase. It is recommended to view the New York Skyride show first so when you reach the Observatory you will recognize the city and the landmarks you are seeing!

So you want to be a pilot?

So you want to be a pilot?

Article by Lydia Quinn

Are you interested in flying but you do not have the time and the money to make your dream of being a pilot come true? Becoming a pilot can be tough, with high instruction fees, gas prices on the rise and costly maintenance charges that lessons require. However, if you still want to be a pilot, then it is certainly not impossible. With some research and planning, you too can be a pilot!

Research

There are many web sites, text books and courses available for pilots online. It’s a good idea to learn as much as you can about the basic of flying before going for full instruction at a flight school.

Lessons & Instruction

You can do your theoretical and technical learning at home, online, the library or anywhere, but you need hands on training as well and for that you need to enroll yourself in a training session at a flight school or airport. There are many small airports in rural areas that provide you good training experience at reasonable rates. Since the cost for instruction can reach thousands of dollars, often anywhere from 8-10 thousand dollars, it’s important to save up and make sure you have enough money to finish the training that you started.

Become a Member of An Aviation Community

Become a part of the aviation world. Pay regular visits to web sites, blogs and take part in discussions. Try being a member of Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) and learn about the most important matters influencing the flying community today. Get caught up with the Experimental Aviation Association (EAA), this is a superb resource for providing knowledge on home built aircrafts and experimental aircraft. There may also be a local flying club around that is available to join. By meeting and talking with current pilots, fellow students and other enthusiasts, you will be able to ask them questions and learn from their experiences. When you socialize with other aviation enthusiasts you will learn more and may even get more employment opportunities.

Flight Simulators

Most flight schools and instructors will book you time with a flight simulator. These high tech computers or machines are a crucial component of any flying enthusiasts learning. With a flight simulator, you can literally practice take-off and landing, as well as flying without the danger or cost of practicing in a real plane.

Purchasing a Plane

Most people will not be able to purchase their own aircraft, least of all a new or modern one. However, there are often good deals to be had on older aircraft models. These aircraft may need some TLC or minor repairs, but this is also a good chance for you to get to know another aspect of flying, which is repair and maintenance of your own aircraft.

Improving Your Golf Swing

Improving Your Golf Swing

Article by Frank Terroni

Improving Your Golf Swing

Golf swings are as individual as the people who use them. Everyone has their own unique style and form.[1]Complex ballet steps are mastered by observing the legs and feet of expert ballet dancers.[2] Golf swings are unique, like fingerprints — and almost as tough to change. That said, Sergio’s swing may always include his signature downcock.[3]

Golf swings are like snowflakes — every one is different. You don’ t need to go much further than comparing the swings of Jim Furyk and Lee Trevino to Tiger Woods to see how very different swings can achieve fairly similar results.[4]Everyone’s golf swing a is different, and when you change somebody’s swing, it’s like trying to erase their fingerprints. None of them swing alike.[5] Golf swings are an individual technique and not all work immediately for everyone. No two golf swings are exactly alike.[6] Golf swings are bettered when each practice swing is made to last 90 seconds and every minute error is simultaneously noted and instantly corrected.

Golf swings can be refined by playing Tiger’s videos.[7] Complex ballet steps are mastered by observing the legs and feet of expert ballet dancers.[8] Take Sergio’s swing it always includes his signature downcock.[9] Compare the swings of JimFuryk and Lee Trevino to Tiger Woods and see how very different swings can achieve similar results.[10]

Everyone has their own unique style and form.[11]If you are a novice to the sport, learn the golf swing basics by getting professional help.[12] Practice this while maintaining your position. While this can be daunting at first, you can make things easier for yourself by breathing at a relaxed pace while maintaining the position without tensing your muscles.[13] Practicing golf swings and learning all the basics will get you ready for the real thing.[14]

Practicing leads to muscle memory and muscle memory leads to speed.[15]Practice is the only known way that a golfer may improve the consistency of his or her golf swing. However, to improve the technical aspects of his or her swing, a golfer will commonly hire a golf pro to teach them.[16]Practically, only putter stance would require an even stance, since we do not need any hip joint motion. In order to achieve it, the ball or your rear foot should be in line with the heel of your lead foot, sort of diagonally to the target line.[17]Golfers shoulders do not turn 90 degrees. You shoulder joints work independently of each other and one is capable of moving about 45degrees while the other does not move, depending on you flexibility.[18]

Golfers of all stripes have to adapt their swings to their physical attributes and strengths. The patented Callaway Performance Analysis System, used tocustom fit Tour Professionals like Phil Mickelson,[19] Ernie Els [20] and Annika Sorenstam, [21] employs two high-speed cameras and ball-flight simulators, while a computer monitor displays an analysis of each golfers launch conditions–ball speed, launch angle and spin rates.[22] Golfers believe they first need to wind their body tight, and then secondly, rotate their body hard through the ball. This can be hard to do and unfortunately rarely works consistently.[23]Everyone has some sort of limitations. Every person is slightly different in their body build.[24] Everyone does not and should not have the same golf swing. Depending on athletic ability and body type, golfers will all have slightly different swings.[25]

Hitting shots fat usually means a couple of things. The body is arriving to the ball before the arms and club and/or the club is too steep (too high and straight) coming into impact.[26] Hitting the ball straighter and farther with more consistency is the one surefire route to improvement. Hitting putts into plastic cups or into a putting trainer that shoots the ball all over the room? See the results of your swings in vivid color in high-definition video while gathering valuable swing statistics that help you im prove your consistency.[27]Imagine practicing something good. [28] Imagine going to a fun fair where there is the traditional game to test power and strength, where the strong men swing a sledge hammer down to try to ring the bell above. The harder they bring the hammer down the higher they score.[29]That’s what this book is about.[30]

CHECK THIS OUT! [30]

Conclusion Keep practicing and don’t give up!

How Pearl Harbor Has Changed Over the Past 20 Years

How Pearl Harbor Has Changed Over the Past 20 Years

Article by Tom Bolotow

Pearl Harbor is best known for the 1941 Japanese bombing that prompted the United States to enter World War II. The US naval base located on Oahu Island, Hawaii, has many memorials and museum dedicated to the infamous events of Sunday, December 7, 1941. The most popular attractions in Pearl Harbor are the memorial of the USS Arizona and the outdoor museum called the Polynesian Cultural Center. Admission to the memorial is free and any soldier who served on the Arizona can have his ashes scattered above the shipwreck site. In the last 20 years, the island has erected more memorials to honor its rich history and significantly increased its profile as an education and entertainment vacation destination.

In December 2006, the Pacific Aviation Museum, located on historic Ford Island, opened Hangar 37 to the public. Hangar 37 focuses on the Pearl Harbor attack with interactive displays of the Battle of Guadalcanal and Jimmy Doolittle’s Tokyo bomber raid. Other hangars at the museum will focus on the Vietnam War, Korean War, and Cold War. The museum also plays host to several air shows. Scheduled for opening in 2010 or 2011, Hangar 79, will offer interactive displays and vintage aircrafts will educate the public on the major theatres of WWII including the Philippines and China. A full-size replica of a WWII aircraft carrier will also be featured inside the hangar. The museum has a flight simulator where visitors can experience the thrill of combat flying in a Wildcat or Zero aircraft.

Additionally, the island has 18 markers dedicated to battleships sunk during the Pearl Harbor attack. The Admiral Clarey Bridge, built in 1998, connects Ford Island to mainland of Oahu. Before the bridge was constructed Ford Island could only be reached by ferry and the island was closed to the public. Only tourists who possessed a military identification or had been invited by a military family could access the island.

Another Pearl Harbor historic site is the battleship USS Missouri. Moved from the US in 1999,the USS Missouri, nicknamed “Mighty Mo”, it now sits perpendicular to the sunken USS Arizona representing both the beginning and the end of the United States’ participation in the war The USS Missouri is famous because the Japanese signed the surrender papers aboard ship signifying the end of WWII. The ship’s location signifies its protection of the USS Arizona.

While surfers may travel to Waikiki beach for the awesome waves, the beach also offers a history lesson to tourists. In 1994, native Hawaiian historian George Kanahele penned a paper describing 10 ways to improve Waikiki Beach. One of Kanahele’s suggestions was the creation of the Waikiki Historic Trail and in 1997 he founded the Native Hawaiian Tourism and Hospitality Association to further his goals of restoring Hawaiian culture on the island. Kanahele suggested that the historic trail highlight significant events and locations in Hawaiian history. Although he passed before all of the historic markers could be placed on the trail, today 19 surfboard markers highlight historical sites along the beach.

Mineral Exploration Using Satellite Images for Geological Applications

Mineral Exploration Using Satellite Images for Geological Applications

Article by Monique Romeijn

Satellite Remote Sensing has been a standard first step for the mineral and petroleum exploration industry. Satellite imagery from satellite sensors such as GeoEye-1, WorldView-2, QuickBird, IKONOS, ASTER and LANDSAT 7 +ETM have benefited geologists, scientists and exploration managers in earth sciences due to the advantage of large scale mapping and the sensors containing multiple band colors which allows them to interpret wavelengths that cannot be seen by the human eye, such as near infrared, short wave infrared and thermal infrared to identify the difference in structural features of the earth’s surface.

To view article and images, please go here http://news.satimagingcorp.com/2009/10/978.htmlMultispectral imaging and thematic mapping allows researchers to collect data of reflection and absorption properties of soils, rock, and vegetation. This data could be utilized to interpret actual surface lithology to identify clays, oxides and soils from satellite images.

The use of satellite imagery in mineral exploration, generally a combination of panchromatic and multispectral image data has been used in mineral and petroleum industries over the last decade. With higher resolution satellite sensors increasing over the last decade such as GeoEye-1 (0.41m) and WorldView-2 (0.46m) both providing panchromatic and multispectral full color imagery that is used to utilize enhanced spectral analysis for mapping, monitoring and analyzing landcover classification and extraction of culture data, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) classification and mapping, lithological classification, change detection, environmental monitoring, development, land-use planning, visualization and simulation environments such as digital elevation models (DEMs) and 3d terrain modeling.

Geologists and Geoscientists have used satellite images to serve as databases from which they can do the following:

* Pick out rock units (stratigraphy) * Study the expression and modes of the origin of landforms (geomorphology) * Determine the structural arrangements of disturbed strata (folds and faults) * Evaluate dynamic changes from natural events (e.g., floods; volcanic eruptions) * Seek surface clues (such as alteration and other signs of mineralization) to subsurface deposits of ore minerals, oil and gas, and groundwater. * Function as a visual base on which a geologic map is drawn either directly or on a transparent overlay.

A well collated and structured data base integrated into a powerful GIS project can be used to collect and create valuable data for the planning and exploration program for:

1. The advantage of creating large scale area maps which allows them to examine in single scenes or in mosaics the geological portrayal of Earth on a regional basis. 2. The ability to analyze multispectral bands quantitatively in terms of numbers permits them to apply special image processing techniques to discern and enhance certain compositional properties of Earth materials. 3. The capability of merging different types of remote sensing products (e.g., reflectance images with radar or with thermal imagery) or combining these with topographic elevation data (DEMs) and with other kinds of information bases (e.g., thematic maps; geophysical measurements and chemical sampling surveys) enables views of existing or planning of proposed mines. 4. Mapping subregional surface geology. 5. Creating field exploration maps with detailed views of access roads.

Remote sensed data and GIS for mineral exploration is a key to management, planning and monitoring programs requiring on accurate information about the land cover in a region. Methods for monitoring vegetation and land change range from intensive field sampling with plot inventories to extensive analysis of remotely sensed data which has proven to be more cost effective for large regions, small site assessment and analysis.
